MONDAY MAKE-OVERS: Combination Pet Bed and End Table

Reinvent a 1970's thrift store find, turning it into a dual-purpose end table and pet bed.

Octagon tables were all the rage 40 years ago; today you can find them at garage sales and flea markets for next to nothing. This end table has been updated  by removing the door and giving the whole piece a fresh coat of paint. Make it pet friendly by lining the inside with fabric and a fluffy cushion.

Materials and Tools
  • Solid-wood table
  • Screwdriver
  • Wood filler
  • Putty knife
  • Sanding block or sandpaper
  • Staple gun and extra staples
  • Indoor/Outdoor fabric or upholstery vinyl
  • Batting and a pillow or cushion
  • Spray adhesive
  • Scissors
  • Nail heads
  • Rubber mallet
  • Tape measure
  • Drop cloth
  • HVLP paint sprayer
  • Primer and lacquer

Unscrew Hinges

  • Use screwdriver or drill to remove the hinges from doors and/or drawers.

Remove Door

  • Completely remove doors and/or drawers from table, then set them aside.

Remove Fasteners
  • Use screwdriver or drill to remove fasteners or magnetized door and/or drawer stops.

Fill and Sand Holes
  • Once hinges, fasteners and door/drawer stops have been removed.
  • Use a putty knife to fill the screw holes with wood filler.
  • Once the wood filler has dried, use sandpaper or sanding block to smooth out surface of wood.
  • Wipe away dust with damp cloth.

Sand Surface
  • Remove the existing surface finish with sand paper or sanding block.
  • Wipe away dust using damp cloth.

Load and Spray Primer
  • Cover floor surface of your work space with drop cloth. Shake and stir can of primer, then slowly pour it into the HVLP paint container.
  • Coat all surfaces of the table with an even, controlled sprayed coat of primer.
  • If interior will be upholstered, it’s only necessary to spray the exterior; batting and fabric will cover the interior surface.

Spray Finish Coat

  • Once primer is dry to the touch and HVLP paint container has been rinsed and thoroughly washed out, load, then spray two coats of finish color.
  • Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours for first coat of paint to dry before applying second coat.

Measure and Cut Batting and Fabric

  • Use tape measure to determine proper the length and width for each portion of the table's interior.
  • Refer to the measurements, cut the batting and fabric to size.

Attach Batting and Fabric

  • After the finish coat is completely dry, add an even coat of spray adhesive to the table's interior.
  • Fit batting snugly to each area.
  • Use staple gun to secure the edges of the batting directly to the interior of the table.
  • Next, place each piece of fabric into its proper position, then secure with staple gun.

Add Nail-Head Trim

  • Add graphic punch and cover up staples by attaching nail heads with rubber mallet.

Attach Pillow or Cushion
  • Place pillow or cushion along the bottom of the table.

  3. There may be a few resourceful pet owners out there who want to give their four-legged friends upscale pet items but are having some difficulty. It's great to take on a DIY project, but where do you start? For instance, a side table, an end table, or several coffee tables and bedside tables are what you would need to create a dog bed at home. The good news is that there are no restrictions for inventive pet parents! You may create a really practical and attractive dog bed for your canine friend whether you utilize secondhand furniture, a TV cabinet, or any other items you find sitting about your home.
